Pneumatic Torque Wrench

Basically, a pneumatic torque wrench is a planetary torque multiplier, or gearbox, powered by an air compressor. Connected to the end of the gearbox is a bracket, or reaction arm, that stabilizes and absorbs the torque. The torque output or limit is adjusted by controlling the air pressure. These heavy duty wrenches have multiplication ratios up to 4000:1 and are primarily used in industrial or mechanical shops where accurate torque is required, or where more power than an electric or digital torque wrench is needed (a frozen nut needs to be removed). Maximum torque capabilities can be as high as 35,000 ft. lbs.

The pneumatic torque wrench is sometimes confused with a standard impact wrench. They may look the same but they are different tools with different uses. Internally, a pneumatic torque wrench is driven by transmission-like continuous gearing. Impact wrenches, on the other hand, have internal hammers powered by the compressed air and cannot be used to apply precise torque. This is why the torque wrench has very little vibration unlike the jarring action of the impact wrench.

Norbar Torque Wrench

Torque wrenches and multipliers by Norbar are high quality, commercial grade tools. They provide continuous and repeatable torque with an accuracy of +/- 5% or better. These tools offer superior gear technology for greater durability along with lower operational temperatures.

Safety is a critical factor to consider using a torque multiplier. Using an extension to gain leverage can be dangerous and is very likely to not apply even, precise torque. Also, when working in tight or cramped spaces around machinery, the use of a long lever may be impossible due to the available space. As always, torque is applied most accurately when it is applied evenly and gradually, so lessening the physical effort of the user is key.

Applications include lug nuts on trucks, buses and large machinery, high pressure joints (steam applications, pressure vessels etc.), engine head bolts and steel structures. There are also non-bolting applications such as testing welds by applying test torques and large machinery adjustments.
